Often there are particular circumstances and challenges with spaces where a mural is an optimal solution. Clare Hirn was asked to bring color into the Kentucky Children’s Hospital entrance area of UK Chandler Hospital, and in doing so to work with and enhance the previously installed intarzia wood piece by Dan Diekhoff. Her design balanced infusing color into the room while responding to particular elements of Diekhoff's woodworking. For example, Hirn's fiberboard cutouts “puzzle piece” together and stand out from the wall in relief. These cutouts were hand-painted with acrylics in the studio and installed after the wall mural was completed on site. The final installation by Hirn flows with the previously installed wood artwork and also stands well on its own.
While working on site over the course of approximately two weeks Clare met many people visiting, working, and being treated in the hospital and came to realize even more how important it is to incorporate artwork into a healthcare setting. UK Chandler Hospital is recognized for it’s Art in Healthcare Program and Clare is proud to be in their permanent collection.
“… in regards to the beautiful artwork around the first floor KCH Elevator and beyond! We absolutely LOVE IT….and believe that our families and patients will also enjoy seeing such beautiful scenery….. This art work makes me smile each time I see it….and I know provides the families with such joy getting to “take in “ the beautify scenery. Thank you for [your] vision and execution of such a beautiful piece of artwork that we are ALL so proud to show!!!”
